Despite being Africa’s smallest and least populated country, Seychelles is a bucket list destination for anyone looking for an amazing beach vacation. It’s also my 7th best African country to visit in 2024. If Seychelles has sparked your interest and you’re wondering what you would look forward to, then this blog post is for you.
Here are seven must-do things that will make your trip unforgettable.
1. Enjoy on the Beaches of Anse Source d’Argent
No visit to Seychelles is complete without spending time on its world-famous beaches, and Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue Island tops the list. This beach is a slice of heaven on earth. From the well-known granite boulders and powdery white sand to the crystal-clear turquoise waters. It’s a perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling since the water is shallow. But if you’re like me and almost can’t get yourself wet for whatever reasons, you can simply lounge under the sun. And take in the beautiful scenery. PS: Don’t forget to bring your camera.
Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and experience the beach at its most serene.
2. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
Picture this. It’s your vacation, and you are fully dressed and ready to dive into one of the most diverse underwater marine with beautiful fish, coral reefs, and sea turtles. It’s like a dream world. Your destination is Seychelles, particularly Aldabraa Atoll, Mahe Praslin and La Digue. I haven’t gone snorkelling or scuba diving, but from what I hear, they make the best spots.
Tip: Book a guided diving or snorkelling tour to ensure you visit the best spots and learn more about marine life from experienced guides.
3. Hike through Morne Seychellois National Park
Morne Seychellois National Park covers over 20% of Mahne Island and has one of the most amazing views. Hiking to the top of the 905-metre Morne Seychellois is probably the most rewarding of them all, and the view from the peak is nothing short of sensational. There are a variety of hiking trails that take you through dense forests, past cascading waterfalls, and up to an unbeatable viewpoint. It’s a combination of the journey and destination are equally important.
Tip: Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and be prepared for a humid, tropical climate.
4. Visit the Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve
The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is another UNESCO World Heritage site that should be on your itinerary. The forest is home to the Coco de Mer palm, which produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom. The reserve’s prehistoric landscape is often described as a living museum. If you want to learn more about the natural history of Seychelles, then you should start your journey here. Keep an eye out for the rare black parrot, too.
Tip: Guided tours are available and highly recommended to fully appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the reserve.
5. Take Helicopter Tour
As beautiful as Seychelles looks from the ground, seeing it from above is even more fascinating. The archipelago gives a contrast between the green leaves of the islands and the turquoise blue of the surrounding water. A helicopter tour around the Seychelles is one of the most beautiful things you’ll see when exploring this country.
6. Sail Around the Inner Islands
The second best way to explore the Seychelles archipelago is by boat. Sailing around the inner islands offers an unparalleled opportunity to discover hidden coves, secluded beaches, and stunning coral reefs. You can charter a yacht or join a guided boat tour that takes you to islands such as Cousin, Aride, and Curieuse.
Each island has its own unique charm and attractions. For example, Cousin Island is a protected nature reserve known for its birdlife, while Curieuse Island is famous for its giant Aldabra tortoises.
Tip: Plan a multi-day sailing trip to fully appreciate the beauty and diversity of the Seychelles islands.
7. Unwind at a Luxury Resort or Spa
After days of exploring, there’s no better way to relax than indulging in the luxury and comfort of a Seychelles resort or spa. The islands are home to some of the world’s most exclusive resorts, offering top-notch amenities, private villas, and stunning ocean views. Many resorts also feature world-class spas that provide rejuvenating treatments using natural ingredients sourced from the islands.
Whether you choose to stay on Mahé, Praslin, or a more secluded island, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to pamper yourself and enjoy the tranquil beauty of Seychelles.
Tip: Book your stay well in advance, especially during peak tourist season, to secure the best accommodations and spa treatments.
Closing Thoughts
Seychelles is a perfect destination for a honeymoon or couples vacation. It’s best to enjoy it with someone, but even as a solo traveler, some of the items on this list can still be fun to experience. But my final advice for you is to go with someone. A friend, spouse or date or even your photographer.
