8 Best Destinations for Cheap Tropical Vacations in the World
In no particular order, these are my recommendations for the best cheap tropical destinations in the world:
1. Palawan, Philippines
Cheap Tropical Vacations – Palawan, Phillippines
This tropical paradise in Southeast Asia is a must-visit for travelers looking to escape the busy corporate life. Palawan is one of the cheapest tropical destinations for budget travelers, and it is very beautiful. First, take a tour of the island, visit the Butterfly Farm, Rose Hill Bakery, Iwahig Penal Colony, and other attractions. Then, go island hopping at Honda Bay for some snorkeling experience, and take advantage of the underground river ride.
While you are there, visit the unspoiled town of El Nido. Explore the forests, coral reefs, and other nature trails in El Nido Marine Reserve Park. Other perfect beaches to visit are Dos Palma and Sabang Beach.
In addition, I recommend you visit Puerto Princesa City – the capital city of Palawan- and relax on its sandy beaches or sail in the beautiful waters.
Pro Tip on saving money in Palawan:
Everything is affordable in Palawan, from food, hotels, transport, and attractions. Just ensure you carry enough cash (Philippines pesos) with you because Palawan is a small island with limited access to ATMs.
2. Bali, Indonesia – Best Destinations for Cheap Tropical Vacations in the World
White-sand beach in Bali, Indonesia
Bali is one of the best places to visit in the world, so you’d think everything is expensive. However, the island offers several budget-friendly attractions and accommodations. So, head to the town of Ubud and visit the Monkey Forest Sanctuary featuring three Hindu temples and macaques for a little over $5. You’d love the lush landscapes and crossing the Dragon Bridge in the Monkey Forest. Afterward, you can proceed to the Tanah Lot to see the famous sea-perched temple. Walk along Kuta Beach or relax on the white sands.
For more fun, take a ride to the small beach and surf spot, Padang Padang Beach in the Ubud area. With an entrance fee of about $1, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and snap lovely photos. If you have more time, visit the town of Canggu, another less expensive place in Bali.
Pro-Tip on saving money in Bali:
Eating at local restaurants or from street vendors is a great way to save money in Bali. For accommodations, avoid high-end tourist hotels, and opt for local resorts. Lastly, minimize costs by renting a motorbike or hiring a driver for easy transportation. You can also use ride-sharing services.
3. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is one of the best destinations for cheap tropical vacations with its warm beaches, windswept dunes, hiking trails, and surf spots. Let me also add that it is home to the highest peak in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte.
Hence, for an affordable tropical holiday in the Dominican Republic, visit Punta Cana. You can go to Punta Cana Beach for horseback riding along the coastline and visit Macao Surf Camp to surf the warm waters. Don’t leave until you’ve had an adventure on the Punta Cana Dune Buggy to explore the lovely dunes. If you love snorkeling, you can join a catamaran tour to Cardeza de Toro Natural Reserve to see marine creatures.
Tips on saving money in Punta Cana:
Stay in the all-inclusive resorts on the island for good deals on accommodations. The island generally has cheap places to eat, drink, and have fun.
4. Curaçao
Best Tropical Vacations on a Budget – Curacao
Another cheap tropical vacation destination is Curaçao, famous for its pleasant weather and amazing beaches. Enjoy the natural beauty of Curaçao beaches. Visit Playa Lagun, Playa Jeremi, and Playa Kalki for inexpensive beach experiences. Dine at El Gordo or La Boheme for local tasty meals like fresh seafood and keshi yena.
In addition, Curaçao is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage city. So you can take a tour of the city, visit the Maritime Museum and see street art.
Tip for Budget Travelers:
The public transport in Caraçao is reliable, fast, and cheap, giving you a chance to have fun on a budget.
5. Zanzibar Island, Tanzania – Best Destinations for Cheap Tropical Vacations
Zanzibar, Tanzania
If you’re looking for the best tropical islands to visit in Africa on a budget, look no further than Zanzibar. Zanzibar Island also known as Unguja in Tanzania is home to some of the best beaches in the world with soft sands, scenic views, and warm weather.
There are many incredibly fun things to do in Zanzibar without breaking the bank. Firstly, explore the historical sites in Stone Town. I recommend the great Omani Fort, the House of Wonders, and Hamamni Persian Baths. You can also see the coral reefs and visit the Fish Market where you can even see sharks.
Visit the island of Mnemba Atoll where the beaches are suitable for diving even for an inexperienced swimmer. Head to the West Bank for a snorkel ride to see reef fish and eels, blue spotted manta rays and other marine life.
But the best of them all is Kendwa – the widest beach in Zanzibar, making it a popular tourist choice. You can swim in the waters and enjoy local meals at the restaurants. Kendwa also has great nightlife and budget-friendly accommodations like the thatched bandas.
However, if you are seeking a more quiet tropical vacation along the coastline, visit the laidback islands of Pongwe and Jambiani.
Tip for Budget Travelers:
Book cheap flights during the off-peak seasons between March to May and from November to early December. Eat at local restaurants and take the local buses called “daladala,” ferries, and trains to cut costs.
6. Zakynthos, Greece
Blue Caves of Zakynthos, Greece
Zakynthos is one of the cheapest tropical places to travel in Greece. The island has lovely beaches, stunning views, and other attractions like museums and art galleries.
I recommend a day trip on the ferry to explore the Hidden Treasure Cave and the famous Navagio Beach. You can also hire a beach buggy to explore the mountains and take great pictures. Also, swim or relax on the beaches of Mzithres featuring white sands and white-cliffs with turquoise waters.
Pro-Tip on saving money in Zakynthos:
For budget travelers, dine in local taverns or restaurants for authentic Greek cuisine. Book your daily activities in advance for better deals. Also, book your room online and rent a quad bike that can seat two people for budget transport. In addition, take advantage of free attractions like strolling along the coastline or towns and lounging on the beach.
7. Phuket, Thailand
Sailing between tall cliffs in Phuket waters
Phuket is a beautiful island with stunning beaches and waterfalls located on the western coast of Thailand. Its affordable accommodations and cheap authentic meals make it one of the best destinations for cheap tropical vacations in the world.
While here, I recommend you visit the calm and less crowded Ban Tao, Kamala, and Nai Harn beaches. These beaches are perfect for relaxation and the picturesque landscapes are great for photography. Pamper yourself to a massage in the many Thai-spa parlors. Also, enjoy tasty meals like the pizza pasta from street vendors or local restaurants.
Visit the famous Big Buddha in its temple free of charge and finish off with shopping in the local market for clothes. You can get good bargains on goods.
Expert tips to save money in Phuket:
Stay in cheap hotels and book activities online or at local tour shops. Eat meals from street vendors or local cafes.” Tuk Tuk” (cycle rickshaw) is cheaper for getting around the island.
8. Cancun, Mexico
Cancun, Mexico
Among the best cheap tropical destinations in the world is Cancun in Mexico. The island attracts visitors every year because of its stunning white-sand beaches and colorful coral reefs.
Take a fun day trip on the Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres and lounge at the beach of Playa Norte while snacking on grilled shrimp skewers. Don’t miss the snorkel ride to swim with whale sharks from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. If you’re visiting with kids, head to the Aquarium. Kids can get to touch the starfish and sea urchins and watch dolphins swim. To take a break from the beach, I highly recommend Rita de los Cenotes with dozens of Cenotes to swim in.
In addition, explore Croco Cun Zoo to see white-tailed deer, crocodiles, and other Yucatan wildlife. The Mayan Museum and archeological sites like El Rey and El Meco are also great places to visit in Cancun.
Pro-Tip for Budget-Travelers to Cancun:
Avoid tourist traps instead visit traditional markets and restaurants for food and drinks. Stay in hostels or downtown Cancun for cheap accommodations. Cut down on tour guides and visit attractions on your own. Pay for goods and services in Mexican pesos instead of US Dollars. This will help you get better exchange rates and prices.
