Istanbul, Turkey’s capital, has mouth-greening architecture and is the only city in the world split between two continents, Europe and Asia. You will find that the city has a rich cultural diversity, however, the lingering question is; is Istanbul safe for women?
While I’m a fan of solo travel for women due to the benefits of experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, and just generally having fun alone, I won’t recommend Istanbul for first-time solo female travelers. I’ll tell you why!
Istanbul is not one of the safest places for women traveling solo. This is backed up by a ranking of 139th position in the Global Peace Index 2024. There have been reports of terrorist attacks, petty crimes, and low violence against women.
Also, there’s the issue of scams. Everyone from taxi drivers to bazaar sellers, and more are out to extort money from visitors. So, you have to be ready to haggle over prices of goods and services before settling. Plus, men in Istanbul can be a handful. You will occasionally get catcalled or notice them trying to get close to you.
Of course, this is not to scare you, it’s to help you in planning your trip to the beautiful city. In the same way, you would be cautious in the USA, that’s how you should be in Istanbul.
However, in this guide, you will discover how to stay safe while having a memorable experience in Istanbul.
Understanding Safety in Istanbul
Let’s look at an overview of Istanbul’s safety and cultural norms.
Overview of Safety in Istanbul
Compared to other Western tourist cities, Istanbul is one of the safest cities in the world by population. This doesn’t rule out petty crimes like pickpocketing and harassment in major areas like the Old Town and Taksim.
Due to the Governor’s strategic intervention in protecting lives, crimes against individuals dropped by 9.6% and property crimes by 28% in 2024.
Cultural Norms in Istanbul for Solo Female Travelers
Istanbul has a conservative culture. Women are expected to wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees. Hence, you should dress to respect the culture by wearing conservative clothes. That way, you wouldn’t draw attention to yourself.
Solo female travelers are sometimes seen as rude, so avoid eye contact or staring as much as possible.
Also, Turkish men are known to take care of their women. Don’t be surprised when men show acts of kindness. But, if it becomes uncomfortable, just politely decline and move away.
Safest Places to Visit in Istanbul for Women
Is Istanbul safe for women? Here are the safest and not-so-safe places to visit in Istanbul for women with fun things to do.
Sultanahmet

The Blue Mosque, Istanbul
Located in the heart of the city is one of the safest places to visit in Istanbul, Sultanahmet, also known as the Old City. It is rich in culture and history, and close to many major attractions.
On one side is the Blue Mosque and on the other side is Hagia Sophia, two must-visit sites. Explore the Blue Mosque or Sultan Ahmed Mosque built in the 1600s and Hagia Sophia, an historical mosque from the 1450s. Make sure to pack a scarf to cover your head if you plan to visit religious sites.

Topkapi Palace, Istanbul
In between the two mosques is the Sultanahmet Square with plenty of places to sit and watch the water fountain in the distance with beautiful tulips around it.
Other things to do in Sultanahmet include a visit to the Topkapi Palace within walking distance of the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar to shop for clothes, jewelry, and lamps. But, the Grand Bazaar can be very crowded with everyone trying to sell you something. Ensure to negotiate before buying items and keep your belongings safely.
Sisli

Harbiye Museum, Istanbul
Sisli is an elite neighborhood in Istanbul known for its transportation, parks, malls, and luxury hotels.

Istanbul Cevahir Shopping Mall
You can take the metro buses or metro in Sisli to any area in Istanbul like the Old City, Taksim, and Sultanahmet, all in one hour. While here, shop at the best shopping malls in Istanbul like Cevahir Shopping Mall.
Then, walk around the area to Osmanbey and the posh Nisantasi area and you can also visit the old museum in the area, Harbiye Museum.
Beyoglu

Galata Bridge, Istanbul
This vibrant Istanbul district is a multicultural area with beautiful buildings, rich history, nightlife, and some safe places for female travelers to visit.
Head to Cihangir, an affluent area with cafes and boutiques, or see the historical Church of Saint Anthony of Padua built in 1913.

Galata Tower
Some must-visit sites close to Beyoglu are the Galata Bridge where fishermen can fish straight from the Bosphorus and sell to local restaurants and the Galata Tower which has great views of the city from the top.
Kadikoy

Safest Places to Visit in Istanbul – Kadikoy Square
Kadikoy is a great choice for solo female travelers to Istanbul due to its safe but lively atmosphere, diverse food scene, and great arts and crafts accessible by ferry.
Right at the heart of the area is the Kadikoy Square lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, great for people watching. You can wander around the well-paved streets, browsing the shops and sipping fresh Turkish tea at the cafes.

Bosphorus Cruises
Catch the sunset at Kadikoy Pier with stunning views of the Bosphorus Strait and the European side of Istanbul.
Taksim

Popular Places to Visit in Istanbul – Taksim
Taksim Square in Istanbul is one of the liveliest areas in the city. Located at the northeastern end of Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a famous street in Istanbul, Taksim offers vibrant nightlife, bars, and restaurants.

Taksim Square, Istanbul
It’s a great place to people-watch from a restaurant window or browse the shops, and sip on delicious Turkish ice cream as you walk around.
Due to its crowdedness, petty crimes like pickpocketing or even riots may happen. So, I’ll advise not staying late at the Square beyond 10 pm and while you’re there, keep your belongings close.
Transportation Safety for Women in Istanbul
Istanbul offers various transportation options for getting around the city.
Metro
The metro is the best public transport for solo female travelers in Istanbul. It is very efficient with well-maintained stations and clear signage. You can get to anywhere in the city with the metro. However, avoid late-night travel alone and prioritize well-lit busy stations.
Tram (T1)
The Tram or T1 is another good choice for getting around, especially for sightseeing, but you must be mindful of your surroundings.
Taxi
Ride-sharing services like Uber and BiTaksi are available in Istanbul. They are safer options compared to hailing a random cab on the street. If you must hail a cab on the street, ensure it’s at a designated stand and haggle the price before entering.
How to Get to the City from the Airport
My recommendations on the best ways to get to the city’s center from the airport are:
- Order a taxi from the airport. You can use the Uber app to call a ride. The taxi will drop you off at your destination for about $20. The only issue here is the language barrier, so I advise you to have Google Translate on your phone for smoother communication.
- Take the Havaist bus to Kadikoy (you can buy a ticket on the bus for about $3.6). Then, ferry from Kadikoy to Eminonu and walk a bit to Sirkeci. But, you will still need to drag your suitcase to your accommodations.
In addition, Istanbulkart is the best way to pay for your transport in the city. It is a refillable card that covers all the major public transport options – metro, tram, buses, and ferry. You can either apply for the Istanbul card online or visit one of the Istanbulkart Application Centres in the city or at the airport.
